Max Butler, born November 18, 1954, to Max W. Butler and Patsy (Cole) Butler, passed away leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and family devotion.
Max had a big heart, and nothing brought him more joy than being with his family—especially his grandchildren, who were truly the light of his life. He was their biggest supporter, cheerleader, and friend.
He is survived by his loving wife, Tina; his daughters, Amy (Larry) Jackson of Cleveland, TN, and Heather Butler of Belleville, IL; and his siblings, Debbie (Jerry) Conaway of Granbury, TX, Pamela Brandon of Mt. Vernon, IL, and Patrick Butler of Belleville, IL.
Max was also blessed with his “bonus” children, whom he loved as his own: Holly (Chad) Burks of Johnston City, IL, Olin (Stephanie) Sparks of Clarksville, TN, and Eric (Alexis) Sparks of Carterville, IL. His five grandchildren—Bryndle (Shane) McCowen, Jaxton Burks, Dakoda Sparks, Noah Sparks, and Evangeline Sparks—were the pride & joy of his days. He was especially excited to welcome his first great-granddaughter, expected in December 2025.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, David Feig; his daughter, April; and his sister-in-law, Heather Watgen.
Max dedicated 29 years to the Illinois Department of Corrections, retiring as a Lieutenant in December 2006. Outside of his work, he loved firing up his smoker, swapping barbecue stories, cheering on local dirt track racing, & testing the limits of his taste buds with the hottest hot sauces and peppers he could find.
He also had a soft spot for his three cats—Leo, Daisy, and Sprite—who rarely left his side.
Max will be remembered for his love and relationship with Jesus Christ which fueled his faith, his generous heart, and his unwavering love for his wife & family. We find peace knowing he is now resting in the eternal care of Jesus Christ. Memorial service will be Sunday September 7, 2025 at the Van Natta Funeral Home 3:00 pm , Rev. T. J. Gentry officiating with visitation will be from 1:00 pm until time of service. Memorial donations can be made to Make a Wish Foundation, envelopes will be provided.
