Herrin

Linda Gene Payne 87, born in Herrin to Evans "Red" and Violet Marie (Loftus) Driemeyer, who have since passed, lived a life rich in love and connection. She entered this world with a kind spirit and continued to share that warmth with all she met.

On May 17, 1958, she married the love of her life, George H. Payne, with whom she shared an extraordinary journey of 67 years. Their bond was a beautiful testament to enduring love, built on mutual respect, laughter, and countless treasured moments.]

Linda leaves behind two daughters, Georgia (Keith) Jeralds of Herrin and Lori (Marc) Brewer of Taylorsville, Kentucky, who carry forth the legacy of love and kindness she instilled in them. She is also cherished by three beloved grandchildren, Amber (Brad) Powell of Shiloh, Illinois; Aaron (Traci) Jeralds of Herrin; and Austin (Sarah) Brewer of Georgetown, Kentucky, as well as four great-grandchildren, Lindy and Londyn Jeralds, Caleb Powell, and Grayson Brewer, who will always remember her gentle spirit and loving smile.

Linda is survived by her sister, Leah (Fred) Schuttek; sisters-in-law, Mildred Taylor and Eva King; brother-in-law, Joe Payne; and several nieces and nephews, all of whom felt the warmth of her love.

She was predeceased by her parents and in-laws, George H. and Pearl "Granny" Payne, her brother Danny Driemeyer, and her nephew Danny Driemeyer Jr.

A devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Herrin, Linda dedicated over 30 years to teaching Sunday School to three-year-olds, nurturing their young hearts and minds. After retiring from her teaching role, she joined the Agape Women’s Class, forming cherished friendships that further enriched her life.

Linda's greatest joy came from being surrounded by her husband and family. An avid pianist who played by ear, she shared her musical talent with many — from family gatherings to children's programs, even bringing joy to nursing home residents. Linda had a passion for baking and enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether mowing the yard on her John Deere, caring for her beautiful flowers, or tending to her blackberry bushes to create her famous jelly.

Her family will forever hold dear the joyful memories created during their time together. Linda’s infectious smile and humorous spirit brought lightness to every moment, making her an irreplaceable presence in their lives. Though her absence will be profoundly felt, they take comfort in knowing she is reunited with her beloved George.

A private funeral service will be held, with entombment at Egyptian Memorial Gardens in Herrin. Arrangements have been entrusted to Van Natta Funeral Home.

Linda Gene Payne’s life is a reminder of the power of love, family, and community, and she will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
