Leo (Sonny) E Mattingly, Jr, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully at Herrin Hospital on February 23rd, 2026, surrounded by his family and friends. He was born in DuQuoin Illinois, on October 27th, 1948, to his loving parents Leo and Betty (Robinson)
Mattingly. Leo's life was a testament to love, resilience, and community spirit.He is lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Shelley and her husband Allan Mays of Mulkeytown, Illinois, and Shannon Mattingly of Energy, Illinois. Leo's legacy continues through his four grandchildren Kaylee and Dakota Whitlock, Ariel Mays and her significant other Cody Scott, and Jessica Mays, as well as three great-grandchildren, Khloe Palmer, Paislynn Mays, and Huxton Scott.Leo is also survived by his brother, William, and sister-in law Christine Mattingly of Herrin,Illinois, and his sister Susan and brother-in-law Jim South of Ferges, Illinois.A proud veteran, Leo served in the US Army during the Vietnam era. Following his time in the army, he worked for many years at Mattingly Nursing Home and served his community by coaching several flag football teams, inspiring many young athletes with his enthusiasm. Leo also made many memories and friendships, riding his motorcycles on Southern Illinois roads. A self-taught craftsman, he enjoyed restoring furniture and making crafts to share with his great-grandchildren. Still, Sonny found time to spoil his beloved dogs, especially Eagle and Rowdy.He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Frances, his brother David, and a special friend, Betsy Hurley, each of whom held a special place in Leo's heart.Family and friends are invited to celebrate Leo's life on Saturday, February 28th, 2026, at 1:00pm at Van Natta Funeral Home, with Reverend Ralph Brandon officiating. Visitation is from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Leo will be laid to rest at the Herrin City Cemetery, with a US Army honor guard detail, VFW of Herrin, and the American Legion.  Leo will most certainly be missed, but remembered fondly and frequently. Donations made to defray burial costs are needed and sincerely appreciated, and can be made directly to the funeral home envelopes will be provided.
