John Thomas (Tom) Williams, age 83, of Herrin, Illinois, passed away on March 16, 2026, at Herrin Hospital. Born on June 28, 1942, in Herrin to Harry G. and Ruth (Garrison) Williams, Tom lived a life marked by dedication to education, community, and faith.
An Eagle Scout and proud alumnus of Southern Illinois University (SIU), Tom earned a Bachelor of Science degree in forestry in 1968 and went on to receive a Master of Science degree in botany in 1970. His distinguished career at SIU spanned over 33 years, culminating in his role as Associate Provost in the SIU School of Medicine before retiring on October 1, 1998.
A devoted member of his faith community, Tom was initially part of the First Presbyterian Church in Herrin before joining the Royalton Church of the Nazarene in 2010, where he actively served on the church board. Following his retirement, he completed a two-year commissioned lay pastor training program through the Presbyterian Church (USA) Synod of Lincoln Trails, serving the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church in Crab Orchard and the First Presbyterian Church of Grand Tower.
Tom cherished outdoor pursuits, including hunting, fishing, and gardening, reflecting his lifelong appreciation for nature.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Joyce Curby Williams; daughter Kirstin Anne and her husband Kyle Carson of Carterville; sons David and his wife Joan Williams of Johnston City, John Allen and his wife Crystal Williams of Benton, Kentucky; and stepson Lance Curby. He also leaves behind grandchildren Garrett Ryan Epps, Jessica DeLane Epps, Taylor Marie and her husband Peter Moniz and Anthony and wife Tatum Curby ; one aunt; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Also 2 great grand children, Renee and Maeson.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Karen Katherine Hostetler Williams; sister Judith Williams; and step son Chet Curby.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at the Royalton Church of the Nazarene, 412 West 3rd Street, Royalton, Illinois, with Reverend Bob Flowers officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will follow at Egyptian Memorial Cemetery in Herrin. Arrangements are entrusted to Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin.
