George H. Payne Jr., age 89, of Herrin, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication. Born to George H. Payne Sr. and Pearl Payne, both of whom preceded him in death, George was a devoted husband to Linda Gene Driemeyer, whom he married on May 17, 1958. Together, they celebrated 67 beautiful years of marriage before her passing.

He is survived by his two beloved daughters, Georgia (Keith) Jeralds of Herrin and Lori (Marc) Brewer of Taylorsville, Kentucky. George took great joy in being a grandfather to three grandchildren: Amber (Brad) Powell, Aaron (Traci) Jeralds, and Austin (Sarah) Brewer, and he cherished his four great-grandchildren: Lindy and Londyn Jeralds, Caleb Powell, and Grayson Brewer. He is also mourned by his sister Eva King, brother Joe Payne, sister-in-law Leah (Fred) Schuttek, and many cherished nieces and nephews.

George was a proud veteran who served in the Army. He dedicated a significant part of his career as a coal miner for Inland Steel/Consol, retiring in 1996. Known for his strong work ethic, he spent many happy hours in his workshop pursuing woodworking and tending to his yard. He enjoyed family gatherings and had a passion for hunting, always embracing the joy of time spent with loved ones. George possessed a deep curiosity about the world around him and was eager to keep up with advancing technologies. Friends and family will fondly remember him for his unwavering dedication and love for watching "The Outlaw Josey Wales."

George is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Linda, his sister Helen McBride, brother-in-law George Kenner, Pat McBride, and niece Linda Kay Payne.

In honoring his wishes, funeral services will be private. He will be laid to rest at Egyptian Memorial Gardens in Herrin. Arrangements are entrusted to Van Natta Funeral Home.

George H. Payne Jr. will be deeply missed by all who knew him and will be remembered for the warmth he brought into their lives.
