Fredrick O. Ice, affectionately known as Fred, "The Battler" of Herrin, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026, at Herrin Hospital. He was born on September 2, 1934, in Herrin to John Quincy and Lucy (Long) Ice.
Fred is survived by his loving daughter, Luana Nicks of Herrin, and his son, Daryl Ice of Benton. He was a proud grandfather to Earl "Tom" Glisson of Herrin. Fred was preceded in death by his siblings, including sisters, Helen Mae Bozue, Barbara Robison, Linda Summary along with his step-sister, Rosemary Gossage and brother Eddie Ice and Son-in-Law, Michael Nicks. He also was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lesta (Carol) Blythe Ice, in 1995, as well as his parents and stepmother, Eva Dean Ice.
Fred was the dedicated owner of ABC Carpet Cleaners and was an active member of the Herrin Masonic Lodge #693, the Teamsters and was an Honorable Man. He was an avid fan of the Chicago White Sox and enjoyed playing pool. His love for country music, particularly Johnny Cash and Hank Williams Sr., was well-known among friends and family.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 6, 2026, at Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin. Prior to the service, there will be a visitation from 11:00 AM until the time of the service. Fred will be laid to rest in Blairsville Cemetery in Blairsville, Illinois.
Fred's warmth, kindness, and passion for life with a witty and humorous personality will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially from his Grand-Son, "Tom", who knew he was his favorite person in the world and who knew he was an Extremely Honorable Man to All, and was becoming a TikTok favorite known as "Grandpa Fred".
