Edwin Cox

Edwin Cox, a gentle soul who graced this world with his presence, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at the Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Virden, Illinois. Born on September 21, 1922, in Williamson County to Robert L. and Clara E. (Short) Cox, he embarked upon a remarkable journey through life.

In love and commitment, Edwin married Mae Schack Cox on November 18, 1939. Their enduring bond was tragically broken in 2015, just shy of their 76th wedding anniversary.

Edwin will forever be held dear in the hearts of his loved ones. He is survived by his loving son Larry and wife Elena Cox of Arlington, Texas and his devoted daughter Barbara Gentry of Farmersville, Illinois. The heartfelt memories of Edwin also live on through his grandchildren: Diann Josten of Herrin and Kelly Cox of Cahokia, Illinois; Curtis and wife Amy Gentry of Henderson, Nevada; Marcus Gentry of Springfield, Illinois; Ricky Cox of Cahokia, Illinois. Additionally, his legacy extends to two great-grandsons: Alex Gentry of Springfield and Dakota and wife Rachael Josten of Herrin; along with three great-granddaughters: Jorden, Julia, and Emma Gentry—all hailing from Springfield. Edwin also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who were enriched by his presence.

Joining eternity with grace and serenity, Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Virgil; his sister Juanita Harris; and his precious son Jerry Cox.

A devout member of the 2nd Baptist Church in Herrin, Edwin found solace in faith throughout his life's journey.

The celebration of Edwin's remarkable life will commence with a funeral service on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Van Natta Funeral Home. Prior to the service, friends and loved ones may pay their respects during visitation starting at 11:00 am. Edwin will be laid to rest in the tranquil grounds of Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville.
