Herrin

David Mattingly, a devoted community pharmacist and beloved business owner in Herrin, passed away on October 5, 2025, at the age of 68. As the owner of Herrin Drug, David served his community with compassion, integrity, and a ready smile for everyone who walked through his doors.

Born in Herrin to Leo and Betty Mattingly, David pursued a career in pharmacy and graduated from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. In July 1981, he founded Herrin Drug in downtown Herrin, where he became not only a trusted healthcare provider but also a caring neighbor. Over the decades, his pharmacy grew to offer delivery services, durable medical equipment, vaccinations, and personalized care. His leadership also extended to downtown revitalization and beautification projects, including contributions to the Herrin coal miner memorial. David’s commitment to his hometown went far beyond his business. In 2020, he was honored with the WSIU Neighborly Award in recognition of his decades of service, generosity and dedication to southern Illinois. Guided by humility and a deep belief in the power of community, David lived a life centered on service and kindness. He is survived by his wife, Tina Mattingly; his children, Tori and Lance Mattingly; his brother, Leo Jr. Mattingly; his brother and sister-in-law, William and Christine Mattingly; and his sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Bo South. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Betty Mattingly; his sister, Frances Mattingly; and his nephew, Jeremiah South.

Outside of his profession, David found joy in the outdoors. He was an avid runner, cyclist and both snow and water skier. In recent years, he took great pleasure in gardening, hunting with his brother and rekindling his love for triathlons. Known for his humor, steady demeanor and gift for conversation, David brought light to every setting—whether behind the counter at Herrin Drug or spending time with family and friends. His positive attitude—in life and in sports—will always be remembered, especially his trademark encouragement “Go for it.”

Funeral services will be held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Herrin on Thursday October 16th, 2025 at 2:00 pm with  Father Mark Reyling officiating with visitation from 11:00 AM until the time of service, also at the church. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Van Natta Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the David Mattingly Memorial Scholarship, which will continue his legacy of supporting education and service in the Herrin community and benefiting athletes pursuing healthcare careers.

David Mattingly’s passing marks the end of an era for Herrin, but his legacy of care, generosity and civic pride will live on in the countless lives he touched.
