Bradford Smith, age 68, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Carbondale Memorial Hospital. Born in Springfield, Missouri, to Wendell and Paula (Downey) Smith, Brad was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose steady presence and strong work ethic deeply impacted all who knew him.

Brad is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Ronda (Covington) Smith; his mother; his daughter Sarah and her husband Chris Mitter of Carterville; his son Kyle Smith of Herrin; and his grandchildren Jacob Mitter, Madilyn Mitter, and Nolan Smith. He is also survived by his brother Mark and wife Mary Smith of Energy, as well as his sisters Wendy Emery of Carterville and Julie Leposky and her husband Mark of California, mother-in-law Jerry Covington of Herrin and sister-in-law, Nina Covington of St. Louis.

He was preceded in death by his father, his brother-in-law Steven Emery, and his father-in-law Coy Covington.

Later in life, Brad came to know and follow Christ, a decision that shaped his faith and brought him peace and purpose. He held a passion for motorcycles and cars and was an avid fan of Indy Car racing and the San Diego Chargers.

Brad graduated from Herrin High School in 1975. He began his career as a welder before becoming manager and owner of the family business, Western Auto, in Herrin for several years.

In accordance with Brad’s wishes, he was cremated. A private family service will be held at a later date. Van Natta Funeral Home is overseeing the arrangements.

Bradford Smith’s family extends their gratitude for the support and condolences during this time as they celebrate his life and legacy.
