Herrin

On Sunday, February 25th, Betty Lorraine Smith, aged 87, peacefully departed her earthly home in Herrin. In the early hours of that day, she was joyfully reunited with her cherished husband, G.H., in a moment of pure love and bliss.

Born on April 6, 1936, in Iowa, Betty - fondly known as Mom, Maw-Maw, and Grandma Betty - shared a lifetime of love and happiness with her True Love, George Henry Smith until his passing on May 27th, 1991. She was the owner and operator of Smith Vending Company.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving daughter Pamela (John) Rosensteel of Carterville and son Mark Henry Smith of Herrin. Betty's legacy continues through her grandchildren: Herb Underwood,Jamie Underwood and her partner(John), Charles Harrison, Mindie (Dave) Cantrell, Zachary (Amanda) Smith, Melissa (Jay) Miller, Andrew Smith and John Rosensteel III. The light of her life also shines through her great-grandchildren: Emma, Gavin, Austin, Kaitlyn, Gracie, AJ and Jasmine. Betty is survived by several brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews alongside treasured lifelong friends. She now rests alongside her parents and siblings: two brothers - Jerry and Bill Charlet - and one sister Mary Duewer.

Betty lived a life guided by unwavering faith as a devout Christian who epitomized kindness and sweetness. Her patience in awaiting God's call home exemplifies her remarkable character. As we bid farewell to her physical presence on this earth Thursday February 29, 2024 at the Herrin City Cemetery at 1:00 pm with Rev. Don Colson presiding over the graveside service arranged by Van Natta Funeral Home; we find solace in knowing that she has found eternal peace in His embrace. Though time may pass, the love we hold for Betty will remain timeless in our hearts; her memory forever cherished and revered by all who had the privilege to know her. In lieu of flowers  memorial donations can be sent to The Herrin House of Hope.
