Esther Spence

Esther Spence, age 91, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at Heartland Regional Hospital in Marion, IL. She was born in Herrin to John and Pearl (Guthrie) Spence. Esther attended business school in St. Louis Mo. Her first job was with CIPS. After a short period at CIPS she went to work for John Creek, Superintendent of Herrin High School for 35 years. She was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church in Herrin and for many years sang in the Choir and also served as an Elder of the church. Her first love was swimming until she took up golf. She was a member of the Franklin County Country Club. She truly loved the game of golf. She is survived by 2 nieces, Pat Parsons of Herrin and Beverly Yancey of Marion. 1 nephew, Patrick Spence of Las Vagas, 1 great niece, Gretchen Hampsey of Johnston City, and adopted niece Kathy Mason of Energy Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 sister Winifred Zook, 1 brother and 2 nieces Jamie and Ramona Spence. Memorials can be made to 1st Presbyterian Church Window Fund, envelopes will be provided by the funeral home.Arrangements are being handled by Van Natta Funeral Home, 427 South Park, Herrin, IL where the family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, June 24, 2010 at Van Natta Funeral Home and from 9:00am to 11:00am at the Church. Funeral service will be at First Presbyterian Church at 11:00 AM, Friday, June 25, 2010, Rev. Michael Neubert officiating. Interment will be at Herrin City Cemetery, Herrin, IL.
