JOHNSTON CITY - Donald Lee Null, 73, formerly of Herrin, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, in Herrin Hospital. Don was born Dec. 11, 1936, in Herrin, to Leonard C. and Ruby Watson Null. They preceded him in death.He attended Herrin schools and was a graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale.Don was one of Herrin's finest softball pitchers in the 1950s and was an accomplished trombonist. Don had lived at Maple House Shelter Care in Johnston City since May 2001. He leaves many staff and friends there who had become a loving, caring extended family, especially his roommate, Sammy, and special friend, Patricia. Survivors include his brother, Larry and wife, Marilyn, of Herrin; two nephews, Kirk Null and wife, Leslie, of Normal and Keith Null and wife, Amy, of O'Fallon; two great-nephews, Jacob Null and Caleb Null of Normal; one great-niece, Madison Null of O'Fallon; an uncle, Alonzo Marion Null Jr. and wife, Violet, of Mishawaka, Ind.; aunt, Ann Null of Phoenix; and several cousins. Services will be at noon Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, in Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin, with Pastor Lori Tockstein officiating. Burial will be in Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Maple House Shelter Care Home, P.O. Box 230, Johnston City.
