Dewey Wayne Smith

Energy - Dewey Wayne Smith, 88, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008 in Herrin Hospital. He was born Nov. 11, 1919 to Saunders “Guy” and Mary Rose (Billingsley) Smith. He married Rachel Christine Sellers. She preceded him in death Aug. 2, 1977. Dewey served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was retired from Allen Industries in Herrin, where he was employed for more than 30 years. Dewey had also been a member of the Energy United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and was currently attending the Union Gospel Mission Church in Herrin. Dewey loved to hunt and fish. He raised and trained field-trial champion stock Beagle dogs for many years and was fond of sitting with friends for hours, sharing stories of his hunting and fishing adventures and swapping guns, dogs and anything else of interest. Dewey is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Jerry Starnes of Carterville; a granddaughter and husband, Dana (Starnes) and Kenneth Howard of Murray, KY; and a number of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Alberta (Smith) Overstreet, a brother J.V. and an infant sister, Jewel. Services will be at 11:00 am. on Friday Sept 26, 2008 at the Harvest Time Worship Center, 1001 S. 17th St, at the corner of Grant and 17th Street in Herrin. Visitation will be between the hours of 6 and 9 P.M. on Thursday Sept 25, 2008 at the church. Pastors Robert Jilek and Todd Hawk will be officiating. Burial will be in the Herrin City Cemetery with military rites. Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be designated to Union Gospel Mission or Harvest Time Worship Center.
