Mildred L. Nielsen

Mildred Lavern Nielsen Mildred L. Nielsen, age 87, passed away at Parkway Manor nursing home on May 12th, 2008 at 10:30 AM. Mildred Lavern was born November 9th, 1920 to Andrew and Lela Gosnell both deceased. Mildred graduated Herrin High School in the class of 1939. She was united in marriage to Eugene M. Nielsen on July 2nd, 1942 in Cape Girardeau, MO. Mildred and Gene were married 55 years, he proceeded her in death on January 10, 1998. She leaves one son Chris Eugene and his wife Raylene, a granddaughter Elizabeth; three sisters, Genon Meneese of Herrin, Mary Ottolini of Herrin, and Betty Appleton of Joliet now deceased, together with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mildred loved the Lord and his Church. She was a charter member of Hurricane Memorial Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for 33 years in the 4 & 5 year old classroom. She also served as church treasurer for 15 years and attended services regularly as long as her health allowed. Mildred was employed at the Bank of Herrin as a Secretary and Assistant Trust Officer for 30 years from 1957 until 1987 retiring at the age of 68. She was also employed by the Herrin Chamber of Commerce as an Office Secretary for 10 years from 1945 until 1955, during the “industrialization program”, and from 1943-1945 she was employed at Luke Army Air Field in Phoenix AZ in the finance office. Visitation will be at Van Natta Funeral Home at 10 AM on Friday, May 16, 2008 followed by funeral services at 11 AM with burial at Herrin City Cemetery.
